∼Our Story∼

∼Ancient Roots∼

India represents one of the oldest civilisations dating back to 3300 BC. Since then, the cooking there slowly evolved as the people did. However, the essence and subtle flavours of the cooking were improved with time.

The owner of Bonoo is a culinary perfectionist. He may not be a celebrity chef but when it comes to Indian cooking he certainly behaves like it. After dining in several UK Indian restaurants his dissatisfaction with refrigerated curries heated up, including the use of frozen as opposed to fresh chicken, led him to explore the differences of true Indian cuisine.

∼The Sharing Experience∼

Tapas is an appetiser or a snack in Spanish cuisine. And just like the Spanish do with tapas, we offer this unique way of sharing our dishes, if the diner cares to experience that at our restaurant.

Our dishes can be combined to make a full meal and can be enjoyed hot or cold.

The advantage of dining the tapas way is the ability to sample food from a wide variety of dishes that hail from different parts of the Indian subcontinent. Our dishes are larger than the standard portions you’ll often find with traditional tapas, however.

This resulted in him visiting all parts of India in search of the perfect menu of dishes. A journey that would take two years of searching. From coastal Maharashtra to west Bengal and Odisha. What resulted were discoveries of select Indian restaurants in rural areas that served dishes uncorrupted by modern fast food demands. The chefs were selected from these travels. Learn more here.

Most of the dishes are original and offer a completely new and improved taste from that which aficionados of Indian cooking are used to.

Bonoo offers dishes that are vegan/plant-based, vegetarian and meat-based, to cater for every type of diner. See our unique, ever-changing menu here.

∼Indian Curry Awards 2022∼

Unsurprisingly since Bonoo opened seven years ago the restaurant has gone from strength to strength. In 2022 Bonoo became the UK winner of the Indian restaurant serving the most delicious food in London.

∼Prime Minister’s Approval∼

In a video message of support, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said, “The thing I’ve learned about being Prime Minister is that the best training I have ever had was working in a genuine Indian restaurant. I know how hard every one of you works from the chefs to the waiters to the restaurant managers and the delivery drivers. And that experience gave me a huge appreciation of the business, of the importance of tasting genuine Indian food”.

∼A Fabulous Selection Of Dishes∼

In south India, we roast dry spices and then grind fresh each time we cook. However in north India spice blends are more popular for example, garam masala. This is where you pound dry spices to make a blend ahead of time. These blends are then used across many different dishes. In south Indian cuisine, when pre-made spice blends are used, there tends to be dish-specific blends, for example sambar powder and rasam powder. These spice mixes vary from region to region.

Our head chef receiving the 2022 Top Indian Restaurant award

The process of public nominations creates an authentic list of the nation’s favourite Asian eateries based on the opinion of residents, leading to a rigorous vetting process by an independent panel of judges. The main criterion of selection for this award is how delectable and exceptional the food is of course. However the second criterion is how comprehensive the selection is.

Broadly speaking, north Indian cuisine tends to be more wheat-based for example, naan bread. South Indian cuisine is a lot more rice-based for example, dosas, which are rice flour crepes or just rice.

At Bonoo we offer dishes from all over the 36 states of India although we group these into areas which are similar. Each group of states has their own distinct flavour profiles and ingredients so there will always be something new to taste at Bonoo.
